So, if you haven’t heard already, my family loves playing games. That included playing a lot of cards with my grandparents when they were still alive. For extra kicks, we would bust out Catch Phrase or Pictionary on occasion because it always resulted in ridiculous laughter.
The best Catch Phrase clue that my grandpa ever gave was, “They’re in your pants…[long pause] …you have two of them [long, awkward pause] … ” Having a team full of men (it’s always men vs. women) the guys were a bit afraid to answer. Let’s keep it clean people! When time finally ran out, we discovered that the answer was indeed… pockets 🙂. We had a great laugh about that one.
Grandpa in particular was so horrible at Pictionary, it led to the best laughs at all. He would usually draw one image and then point at it incessantly until the timer ran out while all of the wrong guesses were frantically offered up. Actually, all of the guys weren’t the best of artists (except for one brother-in-law who is quite talented), so we frequently evaluated drawings afterwards laughing about how in the world someone was supposed to get the right answer with their drawings as clues.
So, one particular Pictionary game, I started to save the various drawings rendered by the men (in particular, grandpa’s) and wrote what the answer was supposed to be. Later, to honor his memory and as an homage to family game night, I framed a few of his drawings and now have them hanging in our house as “abstract” art. I think some people are afraid to ask what they are, but our family knows and it always warms our hearts to think back on those times together. Here are the ones I framed – can you guess what they are supposed to be?
Pictionary Answer Key
Ok, if you give up, here are the answers from left to right 🙂
- While this is not a bad looking plane, the answer is: airmail
- No, this is not a dude peeing in a can. It is: weightlifter
- Last, but not least, this one you maybe got right: bowling
You may have recognized these drawings as well from my spray painted matboard project – the previous yellow matboard didn’t go with my new gallery wall, so I painted them white!
These are all proudly displayed as part of our gallery wall in our dining room. They make me smile every time I look at them and they still garner lots of laughs! I love showcasing this special memory of my grandpa :)!
